SOX Turns 5. A Look Back at How We Got Here

Do you remember where you were on July 30th, 2002? Alright, perhaps the 5th anniversary of Sarbanes-Oxley isn’t as historic as other dates that are etched in memory. But there’s no doubt that SOX was a watershed event that has forever changed the way business gets done. In fact, it’s not overstating things to say that the accounting scandals and corporate collapses that led up to SOX fundamentally changed the psyche of an entire nation. Just think about how your day-to-day job has changed over the last five years.

When I look back at the last five years I never could have imagined that governance, risk and compliance (GRC) would slingshot from nowhere to one of the top priorities on the agenda of CFOs, CIOs, boards and auditors. But it was always clear to me at the time that we were living through a paradigm shift.
