Rumors on Regulatory Reform

Posted on December 24th, 2009 by Katina »Permalink

‘Tis the season for year-end reviews, retrospectives on the past decade and speculation on the year ahead. Over at Network World, Andreas Antonopoulos has several predictions for 2010, with some interesting ideas about the regulatory landscape in the wake of the economic crisis. By all means, please check it out for yourselves – but the gist is, “And you thought SOX was bad. . . ”

He isn’t the only one following this issue closely. Compliance Week has a great roundup on how reform measures are shaping up in Congress (like seriously increasing the heft of the SEC), and the WSJ explores some of the more contentious measures being considered – the proposed Consumer Finance Protection Agency and some changes to the bankruptcy code being biggies. The Washington Business Journal has a good bit on the CFPA here.

As Antonopoulos points out, anybody who followed how Enron led to SOX could have predicted that last year’s meltdown would yield to Something Big in the regulatory world. What remains to be seen is just how far-reaching regulation goes, and what that’s going to mean for day-to-day operations at U.S. companies. We’ll be following this one closely, and will keep you posted on what we’re hearing.

In the meantime, give us a shout in the comments to let us know what you’re hearing, what you’d like to see, and what you think about proposals being bandied about. We’re listening.
